British Irish Lions Australia National Rugby Union Team Australia Scrum Machine

British & Irish Lions tour: Australia v Lions - Will Genia outshines Conor Murray to give Wallabies scrum machine edge

Lions outplayed in breakdown by Wallabies in first half

The British and Irish Lions outscored the Wallabies by three tries to one in Brisbane but it was the home side who prevailed 16-15 in the first Test after a dominant scrum performance and greater physicality at the breakdown.

Lions must improve discipline and be more accurate

The Lions, bidding to win their first series in Australia since 1989, had more possession and territory but lacked accuracy and discipline, conceding a host of penalties which the Wallabies, roared on by more than 52,000 fans at the Suncorp Stadium, punished with ease through the boot of Bernard Foley.

The Lions had a chance to snatch a draw right at the death with a Leigh Halfpenny penalty but his effort sailed wide, giving Wallabies captain Michael Hooper and his side a deserved victory.

Genia steals show from Murray

Australia half-back Will Genia threw down a marker for the Lions' Conor Murray ahead of the second Test in Melbourne next Saturday, after an impressive performance in the breakdown and good distribution, while skipper Hooper was also immense in the back row.

The Wallabies' dominance up front allowed them to gain good momentum and territory, which they used to launch a series of attacking drives that the Lions struggled to contain.
